In 1944 the SS Red Oak Victory was launched in Richmond while
in San Francisco the ASTD Golden Gate Chapter was founded.

Come spend an evening onboard the only surviving ship built in the Kaiser’s Richmond shipyard during World War II and discover how the events of that time shaped, and may continue to influence, our profession.

In the 70 years since 1944 the ASTD Golden Gate Chapter has continued to be the organization that supports the needs of the workplace learning and performance improvement professionals in the Bay Area.

Even though the work environment and the workforce challenges since then continued to change one constant remained:

The commitment to being prepared to effectively and efficiently meet those changing demands.

Come spend an evening experiencing the results of the best training, coaching, talent management, change management, learning technologies and performance improvement programs of their time. A tour and some exploring of the SS Red Oak Victory provides a rare opportunity to get up close and feel the impact of a diverse, well trained and motivated workforce.

All of that performance improvement did not happen by luck or chance! Using documentary film footage from that era we will spend some time underatanding what the specific challenges were and how they were addressed. With a review of the highlights from the all day program held earlier we will review how the practices of training design, training delivery, performance support were not only revolutionary for their time but what core principles remain today. Finally, we will spend some time discovering what challenges remain from that time even today and how we need to continue addressing them. Join us and discover:
  • What the Rosie the Riveter’s of 1944 achieved and who might be our 2014 Rosie’s? What are their needs?
  • How were safety and compliance standards met then and are we still grappling with the same issues, just with new training technologies?
  • What continue to be the challenges in recruiting, developing and retaining a diverse workforce and what can we learn about addressing them?
  • What shipyard employee engagement practices may apply today?
  • How do we balance retaining the best from the past while being grounded in our present and preparing for the future?
