Have you heard that 3D training is dead… but wonder why that needs to be said again and again, year after year? Why hasn’t it just faded away, like floppy disks and color fax machines?

Are you confused about what people mean when they talk about training in 3D? Is it like wearing special glasses to see an object? Is it holographic images of reality that make you think you’re really in a different place? Is it a program that tracks body movements and projects them into a virtual meeting space inside your computer screen?

No, 3D Training isn’t any of these things. (Sorry, Scotty, we’re still really far from computers that respond to voice commands and even further from holodeck technologies). But it IS the only way that people can meet, learn and work together in ways that provide nearly all of the benefits of in-person venues, but without the cost, inconvenience and disruption of travel. In addition, 3D Training enables some processes and learning practices that can’t be done easily, even using face-to-face, classroom training.

If you’d like to learn more about what 3D virtual training offers and explore how these virtual environments can be used to create amazingly effective, engaging experiential virtual learning courses--using discussion-based, interactive, and gamified processes, please join the Consultant’s SIG on Tuesday, October 22 for a presentation, demonstration and (for the bravest among us) an immersive experience in 3D training.

Carla Kincaid-Yoshikawa is the founder and Managing Director of Training in the 21st Century™. She specializes in blended learning programs and enjoys working collaboratively with her clients to create and update curricula tailored to fit their specific needs and goals. Her work includes instructional design, development and presentation using a wide range of formats, including face-toface (ILT) processes; e-learning software (Articulate (Studio and Storyline) and Adobe Captivate); and the most promising forum for virtual training: 3D environments.

Carla has worked in Human Resources and as an Organization Development and Training Consultant for over 15 years, conducting team building, leadership development, strategic planning, change management and train-the-trainer processes with Fortune 500 companies, as well as small- to mid-sized businesses, and with organizations in the public and non-profitsectors. She is also the founder and co-chair of ASTD-GG’s 3D Learning and Training SIG where members can collaboratively explore and develop learning processes that utilize the capabilities offered by 3D virtual environments. She can be reached at or 415-215-3634.

Please bring a laptop if you can.
