There are numerous unproven learning theories still running amok among trainers, facilitators, instructional designers and educators. Our industry is rife with various learning theories that hang around. These theories turn into urban legends that people view as facts. Then we design our training based on those “facts.” So let’s learn which theories have been debunked and stop spreading false information.

Not only do myths get in the way of good learning, they often excite your clients into demanding the wrong solutions. This session will give you ammunition to influence your clients to use proven, evidence-based learning.

Here are six learning myths we’ll explore that have been debunked according to the research at the “Debunker Club” from Will Thalheimer.

  1. Learning Styles Should Dictate Learning Designs
  2. People Remember 10% of What They Hear, 20% of What They Read, 30% of What They See, Et Cetera
  3. Discovery Learning is Better Than More Directive Instruction
  4. Learning Objectives Are Important to Learners
  5. People Forget 90% of What They Learned After a Week
  6. Expertise Requires 10,000 Hours of Practice
