President, 2017: TERRY BARTON

“I'm looking forward to my year as Chapter President and working with our members and affiliates as we transform ATD Golden Gate for the future."

Terry's past eight years serving on the Board of Directors culminate into her role as Chapter President. Terry brings over 20 years of Management and Organizational Development experience to the chapter. She currently Director of Systemwide Staff Development Programs at The University of California Office of the President, a role that has taught her the true importance of collaboration and partnership.

In her various leadership roles, Talent Development was always a focus, and you might even say she is “in the family business”, hailing from a long line of educators, coaches and consultants. Terry holds a Master of Science degree in Management and Organizational Development, which she earned from the University of San Francisco and has been an Adjunct Faculty member at Chabot College since 2005. Terry is an active member of several community groups and is a contributing author in the book Savvy Leadership Strategies for Women.

President-Elect, 2017: DANIEL HAGE

Daniel is passionate about developing teams so they can accomplish their purpose. He consults with non-profit, public, and private organizations. He joined ATD Golden Gate to contribute to and learn from the experience of training professionals across industries. He enjoys applying lessons-learned to his work as an Organization Development Consultant and Trainer. Daniel feels privileged by the opportunity to contribute to the leadership of the ATD Golden Gate Chapter.

CFO, 2017: CHERYL HALL

Cheryl came late to the learning and development field. For 25 years, she worked in Supply Chain Management and Process Improvement for Intel Corporation. Her interest in helping people get better at what they do led her to a second career in learning and organizational development. Cheryl works for Constellation Wines U.S. She has used her familiarity with technology to design and build online and mobile wine education for Constellation’s sales force. Most recently, she has moved to more traditional training and development as well as LMS administration for Constellation.
Cheryl joined the Golden Gate chapter in 2008 and has served on the board as Technology Director and President before assuming the CFO role in 2015.

Secretary and Co-VP, Membership 2017: BRUCE GROSS

Bruce joined the Chapter in July 2010 and after attending the Instructional Design Class and joined the chapter's Community Outreach Program and volunteered to be the Outreach Manager. He wanted to learn more and joined the 3D Learning and Training SIG in November, 2010.  

He has been working at WORLDPAC in the HR department since July 2001. He joined the WORLDPAC University team in March of 2008, continuing his monthly training sessions while expanding his responsibilities to include administering WORLDPAC's Learning Management System (LMS) domain, generating compliance reporting, and assisting with the organization and facilitation of the Business Leadership and Advanced Leadership Programs. To keep team member engaged he then created the Emerging Leadership Program.

Today, he has implemented 3D Learning Environments to the trainings, using them in Face to Face Trainings, Webinars, and taking team members into the Virtual World to learn leadership skills while utilizing simulations that would be impossible to do in a face to face training. Bruce is very happy to have been instrumental involving his company in joining Udemy to take the training to another level.

Prior to WORLDPAC, Bruce managed the interviewing/onboarding process for a Bay area temp agency and owned/managed his own business for 14 years in Ohio.

Co-VP, Membership 2017: MICHELLE POWERS

Michelle is inspired and excited by the work being done at the Chapter and is thrilled to add value to the Board as a leader, team builder, and engagement professional.

Michelle is a fundraising and leadership professional with 13+ years of experience working for inspiring institutions such as Tufts University, Stanford University, and Stanford Law School. Her most recent role was serving as the Director of Development for History San José, one of the largest regional history museums in California, where she oversaw development, membership, marketing, and social media. Michelle graduated from Clark University with a double major in Psychology and Art History and earned her MBA/Master’s in Museum Studies degree from John F. Kennedy University. Michelle is currently enrolled in the Leadership & Management certificate program at UC Berkeley Extension and is transitioning into a career in talent development.

VP, Programs 2017: JJ LARA

While finishing his BA in International Relations at UC Davis, Jesus J ("JJ") Lara started working part time at Kaiser Permanente. Realizing the potential of a great career there, he put aside his early dreams of working at a US Embassy abroad and instead focused on his passion for developing people. Being the first to graduate from higher education in his family, this fueled his passion to help others develop their potential. With a 20 year career at KP, 15 years have been in areas of Talent Development, Diversity and Inclusion, Organizational Change, Mentoring, and Innovation where he has worked with individual contributors and managers to achieve long term learning goals. He’s worked on developing learning plans from an individual level to enterprise wide affecting 190,000+ staff. He thrives on new challenges everyday. Currently, he’s looking for new career opportunities, but his passion for talent development on a personal and professional level remains.

JJ’s passion in developing others extends far beyond his normal workday. Through his career at Kaiser Permanente, JJ started to establish and grow his relationships in the San Francisco Bay Area community organizations. Those relationships have networked across many organizations that continue to drive the agenda for bringing more personal and professional development.

VP, Marketing 2017: MARSHAWN MARTIN

Marshawn Martin is the Director of Partnership Development at Alliant International University, a private, independent university. In this role, Marshawn is responsible for fostering partnerships that help match the needs of businesses with the skills, talents, and expertise of the student and faculty base; matching big ideas with the resources to bring them to life.

A leading consultant in marketing and new business development for both national and international markets, she has over 20 years’ experience in international sales, applying a strong expertise in data-driven strategic planning, and corporate training. She is also adjunct faculty for online business certificate programs at the University of Hawaii system. Prior to her current roles, Marshawn was part of Workforce Development for University of Phoenix where she led corporate business development and training initiatives.  Marshawn has held various senior management positions for companies throughout the West.

Marshawn Martin holds an MPA and a BSBM from University of Phoenix. She is fluent in Spanish, has a passion for traveling, and an active member of Live Happy™.

Immediate Past-President, 2017: ALAN MONTAGUE

Alan is the Senior Learning Technology Manager for Prologis, a San Francisco based, global Industrial Real Estate company. Prior to joining them in August 2015, Alan was  founder and President of IMPROVing Organizations, a consultancy that is dedicated to leveraging Learning & Development to help organizations achieve their business goals.


Alan obtained the ATD's Certified Professional in Learning and Performance designation in 2011 and has over 16 years experience on four continents helping people learn. Committed to the furtherance of our profession, Alan facilitated a CPLP study group organized by a sister west coast chapter on the Delivering Training and Facilitating Organizational change Areas of Expertise. Alan served as Golden Gate Chapter's VP Programs for 2013 and 2014 and as President elect in 2015.

Before relocating to the Bay Area in 2012, Alan served as a Chapter Leader for the Chicagoland Chapter of ATD as VP Finance. And prior to his branching out with IMPROVing Organizations, Alan worked for a range of software companies in Learning & Development roles. In a 'previous life' Alan was a programmer and technical support specialist.

Alan has studied advanced improvisation techniques at many of the top improvisation schools in the country and has presented at conferences and chapter meetings on Accelerated Learning and the use of Improvisation in team building including presenting at ATD ICE in Orlando in 2015.
